25 Years on with Football’s Gordon Strachan
In March 1989, Leeds United Football club Manager Howard Wilkinson offered Gordon Strachan a contract that would pay more money than anyone had received in the Club’s history. He signed a 2 year contract with Leeds Football Club and quickly became a popular figure with the fans.
He was awarded the Captains armband and formed an unlikely midfield partnership with Vinnie Jones – which lead the football club to the Second Division title in 1989-1990.
With the ‘whites’ in the first Division, a formidable quartet of Strachan, McAllister, Batty and Speed was formed. They achieved a well earned fourth place finish in 1990-1991 and also reached the semi-finals of the League Cup.
Strachan was voted FWA Footballer of the Year for his performances during the campaign, becoming the first man to win the award both in England and Scotland.
During 1991-1992, Strachan signed another 2 year contract with Leeds and captained them to the league title. In doing so he denied his former boss, Alex Ferguson, and Leeds’ hated rivals, Manchester United, the title.
Following the Club’s success, Strachan was appointed an OBE for his services to sport.
Even though the Club finished the 1992-1993 season down in 17th place, in what was the newly branded Premiere League, Strachan continued to impress and was awarded the Club’s Player of the Year Award.
In 1993-1994, Strachan managed 37 starts and Leeds rose to fifth. Unfortunately, he was rarely selected in the 1994-1995 season, which ended his spell at Elland Road, where he had spent six fantastic years!
However, in 1993 he was awarded an OBE for his services to sport.
Now Strachan has ended a 40-year wait to be the Manager of the Scotland National Football Team. With the promise to ”make the nation proud” as he draws on his skills and experiences to produce a formidable international team.
We are delighted that, on 4th November 2016, we will be welcoming Gordon Strachan OBE back to Leeds United for an evening in the Centenary Pavillion. Gordon will be reminiscing about his time with the ‘Whites’, his illustrious career and, no doubt, there will be a few amusing stories on the way. A Night not to be missed!
